We have witnessed radio and television stations offering up live animals as contest 'prizes', as well as retail chain stores such as Walmart committing the same injustices! Do they know, beyond all doubt, what kind of individual that animal's new 'human' companion is, what kind of home to which that animal will be forced to live in, and to what circumstances and conditions that innocent animal will be subjected to? Will that animal's medical needs be properly met, will it's welfare be of paramount importance to it's new 'human' owner, and what measures will be taken to protect this innocent victim from harm? NO!! They do not know, nor to they care!!
Anyone familiar with Animal Rescue work will attest to the fact that these are the very things that a competent, caring and compassionate 'rescuer' will take every measure necessary to provide for their potential 'adoptive' animal! No stone is left unturned! Every minute detail is collected, considered, and judged! WHY, you may ask? The answer is simple: "A LIFE is at stake here!" Albeit an 'animal' life, but a LIFE nonetheless!!
We have included below correspondence from a highly respected and dedicated Animal Rescue person who recently came upon an on line 'live' animal auction site. We're certain many of you have seen these sites before, but we bring to your attention the mentality of those who operate such web sites and those who participate in them. That is the 'real' issue here: the mentality that speaks loud and clear the words "It's JUST and animal!"
Once you have read these communications, we 'challenge' each and every one of our readers to seek out and personally contact EVERY live animal auction site and EVERY contest promoter, retailer, and participant offering live animals as a 'prizes' and we ask that you
There are better ways to find a suitable buyer for your horse. Surely you owe it that much. It's not an inanimate object.
A concerned horse owner."
Apparently you don't know what a dangerous website you have your horse listed on. It is illegal to auction live animals on the internet. I suggest you research this site. It won't be around long. Whenever people have attempted to post animals (of any type) for auction to the highest bidder, they get removed.
Surely you can find better avenues to find to sell your horse. It is not an inanimate object and you should be more concerned to find a good home for it.
A $500 bid is "killer/slaughter house material". If you don't have buyers that are good for your livestock, please don't breed.
A concerned horse owner"
As far as MY HORSES are concerned, they are mine, well cared for and what I do with them is my business! PLEASE DON'T E-MAIL ANYMORE THREATS TO ME.
IF YOU DON'T LIKE THE AUCTION SITE, THEN STAY
OFF OF IT...
Email messages from you have been forwarded to the staff of XXXXXXXXXX.com. Your attempts to harass users of our site have incited some breeders to take action against you. We demand that you stop harassing our users immediately and do not attempt to enter our site.. All of your email messages have been sent to our law offices where our attorneys will analyze them for proof of Slander against our business. Our policy is zero tolerance in this situation. This and any future attempts to contact our users will be aggressively pursued.
Your comments regarding the legality of online animal auctions are unfounded. Your statements that our site is dangerous and the suggestion that a $500 horse would be sold to a slaughter house is clearly a desperate attempt by you to spread false information in order to recklessly damage our business. Do you understand the legal ramifications of such activity? I think you are the person who needs to do some research.
We are aware that not everyone likes online animal auctions. However, it is illegal for anyone to generate lies and spread them with a malicious intent toward a legitimate business. It is the ignorant actions of people like you, that do such tremendous damage to the reputation of people who do care about the welfare of animals.
For the record, XXXXXXXXX.com has taken great consideration to promoting the welfare of animals and to promote the integrity of our breeders. A major component of this is our "Protected" auction. All of the animal auctions on our site are "Protected". That means that the breeder has the right to screen and reject the high bidder, if they feel it would not make a suitable home.
In addition, we stress the importance of every buyer listing feedback on the breeder from which they purchased. This information is listed as public information on the website. All bidders are strongly encouraged to visit this forum before placing a bid. We feel this is the most effective way to screen breeders. We also review the Feedback Forum, if we determine that a breeder is unfit we will immediately ban them from the site.
We are aware that with all of these precautions our system may still face criticism, but we know that our transactions are screened far better than the majority of traditional selling methods. Animals are bought and sold everyday without regard for a breeder's credential or a buyer's lifestyle in brick and mortar auctions, classified advertisements, and in pet stores. In this way, we are doing a great service to the animals listed for sale on our site by taking extra steps to promote their welfare.
Let this letter serve as a warning and demand to stop your activity.
FYI - I am not a gray haired little senior looking to occupy leisure time, I am out there in the midst of all the animal suffering.
Your website is on line and is public. You open yourself to "public opinion", both positive and negative. Sites such as E-Bay and others that have had clients post animals for auction have changed their policy after public feedback. I'm sure the same will apply here once others like myself see your site. It is not I alone that you need to worry about, it is "the animal loving American public".
I do not have any need to contact you again. This is my feedback to your letter.
And the battle rages on--yet, YOU can make the ultimate decision as to the fate of the innocent animals being offered up as 'sacrifices' on such "live animal auction web sites"!! SPEAK UP, SPEAK OUT, MAKE YOUR VOICES HEARD IN PROTEST of this despicable 'new' form of animal abuse--for it is nothing less than exactly that!!

AMISH
PUPPY MILLS!!
The number of Amish-owned "puppy mills" operating in Lancaster County PA specifically, and PA in general, has long been a concern of animal welfare organizations. But it is a problem that is escalating as more and more Amish (and Mennonite) turn to dog breeding to generate income. Local zoning boards are approving applications to open new "kennels" and hiding behind the argument that "it's not our job to deny such applications, only to determine where they may be legally located."
It is a FACT, and we challenge anyone to come forward with proof to the contrary, that these puppy breeding operations are usually dirty, housing too many dogs in too small an area, that adult breeding animals don't receive the care and socialization that even livestock deserve, that most of the animals produced are either visibly sick or carrying genetic time bombs of illness. If the puppies produced have any "papers" at all, they are usually not from the accepted leading registry, The American Kennel Club (which is SUPPOSED to be investigating such commercial scale breeding operations when they do involve AKC registrations), but from numerous obscure registries, created with the intent to defraud the buying public who believe they are paying for a well-bred, purebred animal.
One puppy mill owner was just ordered to pay $31,000 in restitution for selling diseased puppies to more than 90 buyers - an amount that was woefully inadequate and hardly compensates for the heartbreak and huge veterinary medical costs pet owners must endure when purchasing a sick puppy from a pet shop or a puppy mill operation. See the article at:
http://web.philly.com/content/inquirer/2000/08/02/chester_brandywine/SDOG02.htm
We are NOT attempting to interfere with anyone's livelihood or right to own and conduct a business. Neither are we suggesting that anyone be "persecuted" on the basis of their faith or heritage. Neither are we prepared to look the other way while animals are being kept in such inhumane circumstances, and literally bred to death .
We suggest that it is time for the Amish, who have enjoyed the right to live according to their faith in this democracy we share, to take up this issue among their brethren. We suggest it is time for the Lancaster (and other counties') commissioners and zoning board members to conduct surprise inspections IN PERSON of all licensed "kennels" in their jurisdictions, and certainly visit the premises of anyone applying for a new license.
We further suggest an economic boycott of ALL Amish-made products, ALL goods and services from Lancaster County, PA, until such time as we see a dedicated effort on the part of local government and the Amish to eradicate this problem. There has been far too much rhetoric, legalities, loopholes, hearings, meetings, name-calling and the like, and meanwhile, thousands of animals are suffering - either as a result of the manner in which they are housed now, or as a result of the legacy of poor breeding. Let's end it NOW!
This matter involves ALL breeds of dogs. In fact, while covert puppy mill operations are often housed in small garages or cellars and frequently involve toy breeds, the Amish puppy mills located on farms, and in barns, often feature the largest breeds - St. Bernards, Great Danes, Weimeraners and Basset Hounds, for instance. Any cute, popular, marketable breed is at risk.
Please cross-post this to all related lists, send out to your address book, local media (especially write Letters to the Editor!), and voice protests to:

Perhaps what could not be accomplished locally, can be accomplished via the internet and the national media. Let's set an example that other states can follow in eradicating all puppy mills.
On behalf of the dogs - Thank you for your participation in this effort.

I'm homeless
and helpless, unwanted and alone;
I've no place
to stay; I wander and roam.
I've no one
to care if I live or die;
Nobody wants
me as hard as I try.
I'm abandoned
and starving and nobody cares;
I've met with
nothing but hard and cold stares.
My stomach
is empty, I've nothing to eat.
Why was I
born and why am I here,
Without any
love, without any cheer?
Won't somebody
love and take care of me?
People throw
stones and chase me away;
They revile
and despise me because I'm a 'stray'.
But, if a
kind soul would open their door,
I'd not have
to be a 'stray' anymore!
THE
POOR PROLIFIC ANIMAL!
If two cats are abandoned into the wild, you could have...
First Year:
Three litters could be 12 offspring
Second Year:
Could be 144 offspring
Third Year:
Could be 1,728 offspring
Fourth Year:
Could be 20,736 offspring
By the seventh year,
the two little cats who started this could have 420,000 offspring!
A pair of
dogs could have 67,000 offspring!
A female cat can
have her first litter at the age of only six months and can become pregnant
again while still nursing her kittens.
A female dog can
have her first litter at six months and a second just FOUR MONTHS
LATER!
Every year, in
North America alone, more than
This morning, I
woke up & kissed my dad's head.
I piddled on the
carpet, then went back to bed.
"The life of a
puppy, oh my, this is great."
Then I thought
about breakfast," I hope it's not late."
Mom took me outside,
we walked for a while.
This never fails
to make Mama smile.
I sniffed of everything,
that we did pass,
I ate something
weird - it gave me gas.
I'm sure God loves
me, I know that is true.
He gave me so many
great things to chew.
Rugs, plants or
rocks, I really don't care.
What I truly like
best, is Dad's underwear.
That obedience book,
was sort of yummy.
Though it didn't
sit well on my poor puppy tummy.
I threw up a bit,
but that was all right,
When Mom found
it later, I was well out of sight.
I made streamers
of T.P., while running at full speed.
Mom is pretty quick--but
I was still in the lead.
I flew under the
bed, and Mom flew past,
She stopped-shook
her head, and breathed,
"You're too fast."
Mama later phoned
Daddy, and said, "It was frightening!"
That afternoon,
she was sure I'd pooped lighting.
She'd sat at the
computer, while I chewed the cord,
She thought I was
mad, but I was just bored.
When Mama had enough,
couldn't take anymore,
That's when my
tushy got shoved out the door.
I love it inside,
but outside is best.
Lay in the cool
grass, and had a good rest.
That didn't last
long, there was too much to do--
Can't quite remember
where I hid Daddy's shoe.
I found an old
bone, and scratched at a flea,
I watched the dumb
squirrels as they jumped in a tree.
I barked at the
kids, when they got off the bus.
I can't figure
out why this makes Mama fuss.
I barked at the
neighbor, I barked at the wind.
I barked and barked,
till Mom yelled, "COME IN!"
The sun dipped in
the west-soon Daddy would come!
I sure love my
daddy: we always have fun.
I barked at my
daddy, then turned on my charms,
I woo-wooed, "Hello,"
then jumped in his arms.
Sitting under the
table - it's sooo hard to wait.
Daddy slipped me
a goodie right off his plate.
I raced through
the house, and scattered my toys,
Ricocheted off
the furniture, and made lots of noise.
Mom found her purse
- the one I abused.
Daddy let loose
a chuckle. Mom asked "Amused??"
I cowered down
low, I must be in trouble.
Dad said, "Wasn't
MY boy, it must be his double!"
Mom turned off the
TV, and said,"Time for bed."
Dad said "Let's
go boy," and patted my head.
I got in my spot,
between Mom and Dad,
I thought 'bout
my day and what fun I had.
Mama kicked out
my bone from the covers below,
Then let loose
a sigh -- a sigh deep and low.
She gave me a kiss,
and snuggled me tight,
And whispered so
softly, 'My darling goodnight'.
THEY
NEVER SHOWED ME HOW . . .
My family brought
me home cradled in their arms.
They cuddled me
and smiled at me and said I was full of charm.
They played with
me and laughed at me and showered me with toys.
I sure do love
my family, especially the girls and boys.
The children loved
to feed me, they gave me special treats.
They even let me
sleep with them--all snuggled in the sheets.
I used to go for
walks, often several times a day.
They even fought
to hold the leash, I'm very proud to say!
These are the things
I'll not forget--a cherished memory.
I now live in the
shelter--without my family.
They used to laugh
and praise me when I played with that old shoe.
But, I didn't know
the difference between the old one and the new.
The kids and I would
grab a rug and for hours we would tug.
So, I thought I
did the right think when I chewed the bedroom rug.
They said I was
out of control and would have to live outside.
This I didn't understand,
although I tried and tried!
The walks stopped
one by one; they said they hadn't time.
I wish that I could
change things; I wish I knew my crime.
My life became
so lonely in the backyard on a chain.
I barked and barked
all day long to keep from going insane.
So, they brought
me to a shelter; but were embarrassed to say why.
They said I caused
an allergy and then they each kissed me good-bye.
If only I'd had
some training as a little pup,
I wouldn't have
been so hard to handle when I was all grown up.
"You only have one
day left." , I heard a worker say.
Does this mean
I have a second chance?
Do I go home today?
