Though the following photos are graphically disturbing to many, their use here is absolutely VITAL to force each and every 'civilized' person that lays eyes on these pitiful creatures into a state of heightened awareness that will enrage, offend, and take action NOW to save these innocent animals! These photos have been secretly taken at great risk from beneath a photographer's coat, so as not to alert the South Koreans to the fact that we ARE aware of their GREED and ARE determined to make the entire world aware of the sadistic viciousness and brutality of those committing these horrendous acts!
Yet, in South Korea the dog is looked upon as a source of food, to the extent it is considered a very pricey delicacy in upscale restaurants, while fast-food chains are now beginning to spring up everywhere serving dog meat--for a 'price', of course! Suffice it to say, the Japanese have their Sushi Bars while the South Koreans now have Drive-Ins serving up "Dog Burgers".
In South Korea, cats are considered vile and filth-ridden--yet, there is no hesitation to beat them with rocks or against concrete until dead, then boil them into soup or Cat Stew. From the lifeless bodies of innocent cats, boiling for extended periods results in a thick pasty substance, which is then sold as an ointment touted to heal arthritis and rheumatism.
The South Korean rationalization for these blood thirsty acts are explained away by claiming it is 'tradition', 'culture', and even an 'aphrodisiac' for men! (Supposedly, the greater torture and suffering the dog is put through prior to death, the greater the effect of the aphrodisiac after it has been consumed!)
It goes without saying that similar practices are regular occurrences in many Asian countries, yet we have begun to see a significant number of the younger generation in those countries rising to the occasion and openly protesting these blatant acts of cruelty. For the first time in history, South Korea now boasts an animal shelter made possible through the efforts of many younger generation South Koreans who are staunchly against these vicious acts. Yet, the effort seems somewhat insignificant in that it is no match against the powerful industrial interests currently raking in billion dollar profits from the torture and murder of these animals!
What is the South Korean government's stand on this practice? "On the fence" to say the least! There is a current bill pending to outlaw the consumption of dogs and cats, yet the flip side is that Kim Hong Shin and some of the National Assembly wish to 'legalize' it! However, Kim Hong Shin and his cohorts are laying low until after the 2002 World Cup anticipating the country will suffer tremendous financial loss should this bill be legalized before that event. They are counting on the sponsorship of this event by largely U.S. corporations which will pour unlimited amounts of money into the national coffers of South Korea, not to mention the revenues derived from tourists attending the event. Stands to reason-- why risk the loss of these tremendous revenues when patience will truly prove a distinct advantage, particularly when immediately following the 2002 World Cup, the bill WILL PASS ANYWAY and the torture and consumption of dogs and cats will be legalized without opposition! At least, 'they' think this is reasonable to assume!
However, have they given consideration to the fact that this polarization will work in the animals' favor? By legalizing the barbaric behavior of dog and cat torture, the issue is quite likely to explode into a frenzy resounding around the World with the result being EVERYONE will literally 'be after' the South Koreans! 'Civilized' nations simply will not tolerate such torture and murder of these beloved animals and will use South Korea as a scapegoat (and with good reason!), thus causing their entire economy to dry up!
NOW--this is where those of us who find the South Korean 'cultural' excuse for these barbaric acts as full of holes as Swiss cheese!! Yes, we are revolted by their conduct, we are consumed with the desire to save these animals from such viciousness, and we are literally screaming for it to be stopped permanently! Yet, what effect, if any, have our protests had? The truth? NONE!!! The animals continue to suffer and die and those South Koreans committing such acts are continuing to do so with great relish and delight, caring not for what anyone else in the world thinks of them! Imagine what the dogs and cats must endure in South Korean laboratories, or those stacked and racked out in the back woods being tortured and beaten to death simply because IT IS ACCEPTABLE IN SOUTH KOREA TO TORTURE AND MURDER DOMESTIC ANIMALS!! Yet, our tactics of protest have failed miserably. We have accomplished nothing in defense of these animals! It's time to CHANGE our tactics, since we have the right of 'personal choice' and each of us CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!
"HOW?", you ask! "Really, quite simply!", we respond. Totally BOYCOTT South Korea! Not as hard as you may think! Consider all of the Korean owned industrial interests permitted to do business in the U.S. and take the route of total 'SIMPLICITY'--DON'T BUY THAT KIA OR HYUNDAI!! Bring every South Korean C.E.O. to his knees in his own boardroom and "on the run" by hitting him where it hurts the most--IN THE CORPORATE BANK ACCOUNT! It's time to 'dump' all the wrong thought processes we've adopted in the past and begin in a new direction to combat the South Korean's mindless 'defense' that these animals are being tortured and murdered in the name of 'CULTURE'!!!
We Americans, amazingly, have been offered up the perfect opportunity to take that first step in this 'new direction'! Please read the following report which we hope will literally SHAME every animal lover in this country into action against the South Koreans guilty of these horrendous acts!
SUBJECT:
(USA-VA) Virginia Opens Trade Office in Korea
DATE:

from wire reports
Richmond
VA - The Virginia Economic Development Partnership will open an office
in Korea in January, Gov. Jim Gilmore said Wednesday. The office
in Seoul will be the sixth VEDP office abroad. The others are in
Tokyo, Japan; Frankfurt, Germany; Hong Kong; Mexico City, Mexico; and Sao
Paulo, Brazil. The new office will recruit Korean companies to Virginia
and establish trade relationships between Virginia and Korean companies.
It will share space with the Virginia Port Authority in Seoul and will
be managed by Sang-Min Woo, the port authority's marketing director in
Korea since 1989. Korea is Virginia's fifth largest export destination.
The state exported $605 million in products to Korea in 1998.
There
you have it folks! Even more ironic is that Governor Jim Gilmore
of Virginia has his own web page on which he 'brags' about his much loved
dog Sparky! Using your own sense of logic, can Governor Gilmore justify
doing business with the South Koreans without defending their senseless
cruelty to animals as 'cultural', while he proclaims his everlasting love
and loyalty to his own dog, Sparky? More than just a 'tad' hypocritical
to say the least! It's time to penetrate Governor Gilmore's Achilles
Heel and do so intelligently and creatively! Below you will find
a sample letter which we STRONGLY URGE EVERY animal advocate, pet owner
and lover to write to Governor Gilmore! We have included a complete
listing of mailing addresses/phone numbers/fax numbers to every member
of the Board of Directors of the VEDP (Virginia Economic Development Partnership),
as well as links taking you directly to the web pages of Governor Gilmore
and the Board of Directors of the VEDP following directly after.
PLEASE MAKE EVERY EFFORT TO UTILIZE THIS INFORMATION AND IMMEDIATELY!

Dear Governor Gilmore:
I noticed your web site emphasizes your great admiration for your companion animal, Sparky. As you know, millions of Sparkys are tortured and consumed every year in South Korea. When internal logic dictates, we know there is nothing cultural about torture. If it's torture here, it's torture there. One might assume parroting flimsy excuses like culture, you would try blowtorched Sparky stew, if offered, because he's part of the cultural cuisine.
Domestic animal torture is a billion dollar industry based on pleasure and profit. To get full pleasure out of such enormity, sexual stimulation is unleashed and enjoyed by South Korean men as they beat and torture dogs and cats to death; the second pleasure being palatable taste. This translates into an ominous, burning ball of obscene madness. This kind of behavior prevails because people do not open their mouths and hearts to defend the Sparkys of South Korea. It is very apropos to tell your new trade partners their fiendish behavior toward loving companion animals must cease.
It certainly is allowable to trade universal concepts and ideals of kindness and compassion in an attempt to rescue man's best friend and feline friends from deep within the marketplaces of the 'Hermit Kingdom'. As most of us know, Sparky is a shining example of gratitude and loyalty. To think what Sparky is subjected to in South Korea by your trade partners is unfathomable. The State of Virginia's inertia toward their plight means the Sparky-torture industry grows in South Korea.
Shaken when I first learned of Virginia's agreement with the beautiful peninsula of South Korea, I now think it fortuitous to help Man's Canine and Feline Friends. Any inroads laid to end this grave enormity is woefully needed. To sluff off such ferocious behavior toward captive domestic animals confirms like mindedness with the torturer.
Many South Korean's are voicing outrage and disgust over the prevalent torture of dogs and cats. Since this is a moral issue, we are compelled to ask whose side are you on? When horrendous suffering is so near and not our own; we must choose sides. Growing numbers of South Korean's need your help. It appears the Governor of the State of Virginia has entered into collusion with those who actively participate in the dog and cat torture business.
How hypocritical for someone to call themselves a dog admirer, and at the same time condone dog and cat torture with the excuse it is cultural. I think it wrong for you to stand stagnant, so near their deep suffering, and not toss a life preserver to those compassionate South Koreans trying to help the millions of dogs and cats. A Pet Pen Pal initiative program between Virginians and South Koreans would stimulate a new kindness and good will toward domestic animals; introducing their innate healing powers to a generation of men frigid in stubbornness, hostility and greed. I ask you again, Governor Gilmore, which SIDE are you on?
The State of Virginia could generate humane education packets to teach younger generations of South Koreans, and other South Koreans now not quite sure what to think about dogs and cats, that kindness and compassion toward Man's Canine and Feline Friends will turn the tide of wretched horror for domestic animals in South Korea. It is inconceivable for someone who purports to be a dog lover to dismiss these atrocities as 'culture'.
I compel
you to incorporate logic and common sense and do what you can to rescue
them. Elie Wiesel said, "Take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor,
never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented."
Sincerely,
J. Thomas

From the author of "Chollima's Arirang":
"For a few years, I have been solely devoted to the animal rights movement . I practice ethical veganism now because I recognize I have a choice to end all animal suffering in my own life.
A few years ago when I stumbled on the situation concerning the dogs and cats in South Korea, I was horrified. Since gaining this knowledge, I have been transported to a higher level of contained anguish than I ever thought possible I could endure for animals. To purge myself of their agony, I exorcise my pain with a collection of poems entitled "Chollima's Arirang".
If you would like a copy of this CD, to raise your consciousness of this ongoing slaughter, please place your order(s) for this CD by clicking the below icon, type the word "Arirang" on the Subject line and you will then have submitted a direct e-mail order for this memorable recording!
This CD will make an unforgettable gift to all of your your loved ones who share your love and concern for the plight of these animals in South Korea, so be sure to order 'several' CD's to have on hand for gift-giving this year--gifts that will provide desperately needed support to the ongoing effort to eradicate this horrid practice in South Korea and provide the "Gift of Life" to those animals who will otherwise be tortured and murdered!!
An early writing from the author appears below as it has for several months now, in protest of the slaughter of every dog and cat by the South Koreans! Now, 'you' have the chance to finally contribute to the effort to permanently protect these innocent animals from further torture and senseless MURDER!!! Don't miss this opportunity to make a difference and give the "Gift of Life"!! "Our World of Animals" is certain you will regret missing this 'once in a lifetime' chance to make the world a better and safer place for all animals!
SEND IN YOUR $7.00 DONATION 'NOW' TO RECEIVE YOUR CD(s) and stop the horrible torture and murder of scores of dogs and cats in South Korea!!
Let me ease your suffering
the moment that you
go
to be hung, to be scourged
Korean song of woe.
Gentle spirit, rock with
me
through our silent night
let us sneak together
off
Escape the bully's bite.
Your pain is mine, I
lay my cheek
upon your battered breast.
Bone of dog, whisk'
of cat
In you I passed love's
test.
