"GENTLE GIANTS"

Our World of Animal dedicates this new page to all the beautiful creatures consigned to a life in zoos, rehabilitation compounds, and sanctuaries all around the globe.  Some are there because it's the safest and best place for them to be, while others are there because mankind has destroyed and continues to destroy the only real homes these beautiful creatures were intended to occupy.  Another striking example of man's exploitation of those who truly were meant to "inherit the wind"!

~ JANDOMORAH ~

From Melbourne, Australia we bring you our newest member,
Perla and her 'adopted' pet, Jandomorah, a permanent resident of
the Victoria Open Range Zoo in Victoria, Australia.
Please read on about this most unusual "Love Affair to Remember"!
Volunteer Guides at Victoria's Open Range Zoo in Victoria, Australia, endure 10 weeks of intense training before becoming 'trainee' guides, followed by 3 months of on-the-job training before graduating as fully 'qualified' zoo guides.  The job requires us to take small guided tours of the walking trails, as well as "spot" guiding which is basically talking to people about the animals at the various look out points.  Only the dedicated complete the course.  In 1999, the course started with 27 trainees and ended with about 20, and a few more have dropped out since.

This giraffe's name is Jandomorah, an aboriginal name.  Jandomorah was hand-raised at the Melbourne Zoo after complications at birth.  During this time an aboriginal boy, named Jandomorah, was involved in a tragic accident leaving him with severe burns to most of his body.  The giraffe was born during the same time and the staff at the Melbourne Zoo decided to name him after the aboriginal boy, since they were both fighting so hard to survive.  A wonderful story, I think!

The boy, Jandomorah, recovered and the Giraffe, Jandomorah, now adores human affection as a result of being hand-raised.  The staff at the Melbourne Zoo normally only hand-raise those animals who have had problems at birth or when rejected by their mothers.  In all other cases, Nature is left to take its course.

This photo was taken on a special behind-the-scenes tour given to "Werribee Zoo" guides by a Melbourne zoo keeper, who gave us one of the most enjoyable days many of us had ever experienced.

Now, folks, for those of you who are keeping that 'pet' elephant in the attic so your landlady won't see it, it's your turn to send us a photo and your story of your own "Gentle Giant"!  Doesn't matter if you work with this animal, care for it in a zoo or sanctuary, even if the two of you don't really get along well, we'd still love to feature your story and "Gentle Giant"!  PLEASE 'NO' CIRCUS ANIMALS unless they've been humanely removed from that environment to a place where they can spend the rest of their lives in love and peace!  We look forwared to receiving your photo and story of your own special "Gentle Giant"!
